BEASTS And Beauties was a magical and rich blend of finely-tuned storytelling and acting.

Staged at Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre, there was no real slapstick but enough knockabout comedy and ‘it’s behind you’ moments to make it feel like festive family entertainment.

Because it’s not a traditional pantomime, I daresay it might have its detractors – but not I.

Put together by professional outfit Spike Theatre, I was totally enchanted and seduced by the company’s fairy tale world and loved the way the sharp script included an engaging narrative to ferry you through each yarn.

From the original writings of Carol Ann Duffy, the highly inventive production was dramatised by Melly Still and Tim Supple.

Each of the eight European tales is told with a visual economy that gets right to the essence of the fable – fabulously.

There was Bluebeard, the grisly tale of a nobleman with a ‘blue rinse’ stubble and an unpleasant habit of cutting off the heads of his wives.

Beauty And The Beast was beautifully recreated with a romantic simplicity that was captivating to watch, and In The Emperor’s New Clothes Spike’s Lee McPherson and Graham Geoffrey Hicks rose to the royal occasion as the ‘two geezers’ who comically duped the king and his household into believing they were the weavers of a noble amount of invisible finery.

Spike also did a grand job at making what is essentially a grim and gruesome story of The Juniper Tree into a fantastic and funny fable with some incredibly clever puppetry, which really was top notch.

And The Girl AndThe North Wind was another tale making amazing use of the minimal but extremely imaginative props. It also starred the excellent Bekah Sloan as the spirited girl who battles to survive the harsh Norwegian winter and outwit an unscrupulous Troll inn keeper.

The cast were all quality performers, including locals Sam Moorhouse and Hannah Plant, both young talents who have risen through the Brewery youth arts programme.

Spike Theatre – The Games blog # 1 – Road trip to Edinburgh – Dreams, memories and Radio 2

Up went the cry, wagons roll; it was time for Spike to hit the road to Edinburgh. The trip up was so much fun, a long drive, but shorter than many will have undertaken. We travelled in 2 vehicles as there are 6 of us up here at the festival, travelling separately always worries me, as there is simply more opportunity for things to go wrong. I am a notorious worrier, I tend to imagine all the things that can go wrong in a chain of events like a relay race of worries. Hence my thoughts below

Will we all get there safely?

Will we make it without breaking down?

Will we get our keys on time?

I could go on, but frankly my worries are my own and are pretty mundane, I want to talk about the good stuff, the fun that a road trip brings, tiny memories that make a journey special. Two particular highlights of our trip were getting a shout out on Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show and flyering a National express coach.

The first was witnessed by many folk as the texts and tweets will testify but more importantly by all of the games team. How you might ask if you are travelling separately? Well put simply, luck, both vehicles were tuned in and only moments earlier I had said, ‘we should text in’ when over the airwaves we hear, Steve Wright say, ‘good luck to the games team as they travel up to the Edinburgh fringe festival, that sounds like a fun show and I might check that out’ both vehicles were shouting with joy.

The second moment was flyering anEdinburgh bound coach, we had stopped for something to eat, and there the coach was parked up with lots of folk, an audience with nowhere to go, who knows if they will come but you cant miss an opportunity like that.

There are many more moments I wont forget, the constant banter in the van, singing along to Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will survive’ twitter friends, my first KFC, getting lost in Edinburgh, even though we had 3 sat nav’s on our phones. The trip summed up what Spike is about; lots of fun with p

eople you care about, creating memories that will last forever.

#EDFRINGE INTERVIEW: Ten Minutes with Spike Theatre - The Games

Turning an idea into a reality - 'Stronger together'

It has been a long and inspiring week and my head is a flutter with thoughts about an event 'Stronger together' organised by Northern Stage, Pilot theatre and Arts council North East. The event was about how the arts can collaborate, the mechanisms to enable this and the benefits. The event was broadcast online with viewers from across the world with additional satellite venues in Bristol, Manchester and London. As Marcus Romer, Artistic Director of Pilot theatre noted towards the end of the day, over a million people will have seen the hash-tag #artstogether in their twitter feed and that it had been the top trending event in London.

I imagine 'Stronger together' started as a concern (to protect the ecology of the arts?), someone proposed an idea, that idea was shared, a consensus was found by all and the idea became a reality. A seemingly, simple set of steps, but as any collaboration will testify it takes a great deal of time, honesty and respect to achieve and this was certainly a great example of collaboration. The event has resonated with me and I felt compelled to share my thoughts and offer my version of the day as it unfolded, as you will discover each delegate will have a different story and this one is mine.

The event itself was beautifully managed, stepping into the space you were greeted by hundreds of individual chairs of every imaginable design spread across the theatre, instantly raising a smile and making you relax. This simple staging gave you something to talk to your neighbour about, breaking down barriers and delicately creating a dialogue before the event had even started.

The event, unlike so many I attended, allowed you to pick and choose your journey through it, ensuring a bespoke experience for you, this is a format I would encourage other events to follow, as too often they are dry and seldom encourage dialogue and interaction, other than a quick hello whilst trying to grab a coffee, to put it simply the bar has been set. The other great plus, was the event was free, enabling small organisations like Spike to attend, the recent 'State of the art conference' was beyond our pocket, although we really wanted to be there and finally if you could not be there in person you could interact via text, twitter or simply watch online.

My afternoon started with 6 inspiring provocations, each with valuable insights into collaboration, followed by open space. I love open space a great way of generating thoughts from many different view points, I always leave those conversations the richer. I dived into the soup, a speed dating of sorts but a lot less slower than was intended, the fact that we did not follow the rules was lovely and I spoke with some insightful and inspiring folk. The coffee break normally the chance when everyone runs to check messages or e mails, but really is to avoid looking like you don't know anyone, was opened out on to the grass, where ideas were being freely exchanged, I learnt about new monies available, which I will be applying for.

Spike create theatre in a collaborative manner, it is part of our DNA, Stronger Together proposed some awkward questions for individuals and organisations to consider. I can see why it may hold fears for some, but the benefits of working with another artist, organisations or venue are vast. Collaboration can be demanding, it asks questions of your organisation, Are we good enough? How do we deal with something if it goes wrong? Will it work? These are all questions I turn on myself every time I step into a new project. I have an idea, a group of people and in 4 weeks time we will show a paying audience what we have created, pretty scary huh? In a word 'No' you must trust, respect, be prepared to take your time and all importantly have fun, each project will be bespoke, each experience unique to that time, group of people you shared it with, and you will always learning something for good or bad.

I have at times consciously worked with folk who will cause friction, this is not some kind sado maschocism on my behalf but a considered decision to provoke 'from friction comes fire' this was something that was not touched upon at the event, but as long as everyone works with respect and honesty then a little bit of friction can take you to places you never imagined and for the better. I think my colours are nailed to the mast about the joys, benefits and excitement of collaboration, so dive in and have fun.

PS. for those folk who saw Alexander Kelly from Third Angel perform you were lucky, for me it was like watching myself but better.

Turning an idea into reality - Don't become an ideas bore - do it - #1

This post as the title suggests is the first of a number of blogs where I will attempt to expand the idea of ideas and explore the reasons behind some ideas becoming reality.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been thinking a lot about the idea of ideas. There are many amazing people in the world who come up with ideas and turn them into a successful reality, but how do you decide which idea to act upon? is there a formula? is it instinct made up of many differing factors based on experience? how do you differentiate, between a good idea and a bad one or indeed are there any bad ideas?

See quite a lot of ideas already, I told you I had been thinking, anyway I have met many people over the years, who have had great ideas but failed to turn them into reality, this is a typical conversation with one particular acquaintance over a period of a year (of course I have kept it brief) but I think it illustrates my point.

(Friend): I have got this idea for a show, it is about .....

(Me) That's a wicked idea, when are you doing it?

(Friend) Well I am getting a few folk together to develop it ....

(Friend): Well, I am still working on it

(Me) Cool, when are you doing it?

(Friend) Well I have not got a date, but soon

(Me) : Heh, how is it going?

(Friend): Good,

(Me) How is the show coming along?

(Friend): Well, I er.. well. In the end I thought it wasn't such a great idea after all.

(Me) Oh, I thought it was great?

(Friend) Well err, suppose so...

(Me) OK, well take care, hopefully bump into you soon.

I am sure this conversation is a familiar one, I am guilty of it myself, and I am sure there are a myriad of reasons why that person didn't create that show. I am sure there are numerous theatre making folk, who have files of newspaper clipping, images, scrawled notes having dreamt something - needless to say I have tons all stored away but none have been turned into a reality - the question is why? Well the simple answer is, I did not pursue them beyond an initial idea an inspiration. If you have an idea, you must act upon them, I appreciate it is easier said than done but don't become that person who talks a good game but years down the line has still not produced anything. I truly admire those people who have the passion and the drive to take a germ of an idea and make it a reality, stop talking and start doing.

Variety Pack - Edinburgh Fundraiser 'The Games' - Friends

Spike recently held a night of Variety to raise funds to support our adventures in Edinburgh, our lovely friends agreed to create and in turn support us with their talent on stage and off. The night was a fantastic success financially, artistically and in addition made a lot of people laugh. I felt incredibly proud to know such talent and have the privilege to call them a friend, a night were I was scared and running on adrenaline (for some reason I decided to sing). I figured that if I was to ask others then I needed to step up and have a go. I sang with Colin, our designer for 'The Games', a beautiful song written by Neil Hannon, "Can you stand upon one leg" and performed a bloody shaving sketch.

The night was best described by one audience member as, "fantastic, it felt anarchic, like anything could go wrong at any moment but it didn't" I echo those words, it may have just been me, but it was one of those nights where there was a synergy in the air, each act stepping on stage laying down a marker for the next and no one failing to deliver. There was a tangible sense of nerves, excitement and support for each other, this evening will live long in my memory as will the brave new work that people tried out.

The night has inspired me to do more such bespoke events, real unique moments in time shared with a group of people for one night only, you miss it, you miss out. This of course will be a side project to our normal touring work, but we have already got some plans underway. The night also reinforced for me everything that Spike is about, friendly, funny and a little bit bonkers and in addition we know how to have a bloody good time.

I think with all the recent events (Not becoming an NPO with ACE and numerous other disappointing news) I had lost clarity of what made us in the first place and I am pleased to say whatever happens in the future this will be our new mission statement and that has to be a good thing. So all in all this night opened my eyes to the future and provided a welcome reminder of the past and if you were there you will know what I am talking about, if you were not then keep an eye out for future events, because the future is what we make it and with friends like this nothing scares me.

Edinburgh fringe - A gamble worth taking?

Well, it has been months of work but the launch of the fringe will be taking place this Thursday, a key milestone for all those companies, venues, marketeers, press and others who make Edinburgh the most exciting festival in the world. This launch offers a brief respite and chance to reflect on the work already undertaken and the work still to do, but in essence the clock is turned on and its ticking!

We are excited about our adventure to Edinburgh, to say it is a gamble is an understatement - but like any gambler you plan for the odds to be stacked slightly in your favour, hence check everything we have done and are still to do and then check again. We have a cracking team, all of whom i trust with my life, maybe slightly dramatic but it feels like that. We were unsuccessful in our application to become an NPO with Arts council, England although we still have funding till March 2012. We could have pulled our trip to Edinburgh, to sit on our hands and do the sensible thing, but like any theatre company we exist to present work, to add to the world, to make people think and laugh, it is what makes us tick, so was never an option.

Edinburgh is the opportunity to show the world what we do, with a show I and many others love, so the gamble is definitely worth it. We have received massive support from many friends, we have raised a significant amount of money (not huge compared to much larger organisations) but significant in the fact that it has been given by people who care about Spike and its future. So the clocks ticking, as we prepare to line up with thousands of shows waiting for the gun to go bang, and once we are off are fates are in the lap of the gods! (pardon me for the sporting and greek references but I could not help myself)

The Ancient Olympics inspiration for 'The Games'

D.I.Y - 'The Games' microsite - The can do attitude!

Warning: What is written below is a bit self-help like, apologies in advance

We at Spike have never really had any money - most things are very kind hand me downs, (office furniture, computers et al) we have always had to learn and D.I.Y.

We need a website for 'The Games' someone said, I replied 'I can do that'. I truly believe that the D.I.Y mentality is the way that small scale theatre continues to innovate and experiment. It means you are constantly learning and applying what you have learnt in unusual ways, this ethos is one that can be a pain at times (feeling out of your depth and taking far longer than a expert would) but the skills gained means I can hold my own in techy conversations and in addition see how things might be applied to our work on stage. It means that nothing frightens me, it means learning and a bit of time and energy, thats the can do attitude. Remember don't be afraid to ask people who know more than you, they can only say no.

Having asked the people of twitter (see asking) 'Weebly' was recommended, having signed up and taught myself a bit of photo shop I spent a couple of weeks creating our website www.thegames-spiketheatre.com have a look around loads of Games stuff from our tour, R and D and other goodies.

Spike will continue to have no money but with D.I.Y and a can do attitude nothing is impossible.

Spike Theatre would like to cast for the David Wood adaptation of Danny Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. This is a co-production between Spike Theatre and The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal.

Since our last blog we have been down to Reading at the brilliantly run South St. The team reported that George Band an original member of the 1953 expedition came to see the show and loved it. I cant say how chuffed i am at this, but shame though i missed meeting him but heh i get to share the news with you.

From the Top of the World team on the road...

Hello,

We’re about a third of the way through the tour now, and we're having a very exciting time on the road. There have been some beautiful venues, for both breath-taking scenery - such as Theatre by the Lake in Keswick - to really warm, inviting and intimate venues such as The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre in Havant and Pocklington Arts Centre near York. We’ve also managed to find some fine eating-holes to satisfy Eugene’s huge appetite (for such a small person). A special mention to J’s Café nr Portsmouth for the “Gutbuster Brekkie” it really did what it said on the tin!

We’ve met a real diverse mix of theatregoers including your hardened theatre regulars and first time viewers. To all of these people, we would like to give a huge personal thanks to you all, for taking time out of your busy schedules to come and support Spike Theatre!

The response has been fantastic, with comments such as:

“A fun packed night”

“I wasn’t expecting what I saw and was thoroughly entertained”

“Creative, Innovative, Quirky, and thoroughly enjoyable evening, we hope to see you again”

At one point we even had the weather of the real mountaineers as the heavens opened and dumped a heavy flurry of snow on us as we travelled from Darlington to Kendal! We were told that the road had been closed by the “Snow Gates” and were quite excited to hear that people's worlds can be turned upside down by snow gates…. However this didn’t stop us. We set about digging the van out of the snow and found an exciting route over the hills, where we paused to carry on our behind-the-scenes filming of the tour and to sing our show song ‘Top of the World” with a backdrop of snow capped hills and covered fields. A truly Hillary and Tenzing-inspired resilience to reach our destination in Kendal!

Our three night run on home turf at Unity Theatre, Liverpool allowed us to settle for a few nights at home as usually we pull up, get in, perform, say good bye, pack up and hit the road to another beautiful Travelodge somewhere up the country. We managed to sell out two of the three shows and the audiences were amazing! Excellent reviews from both the Echo and the Daily Post have given us a real boost on the road. We genuinely haven’t stopped laughing since the three of us met up for the first time in rehearsals. And now joined by Jon - our super technician - we try and transpose our relationship of commitment, humour, fun and comradeship on to the stage to create a performance that includes all of the audience.

On Tuesday we head out again, down to St Albans and beyond, check out our schedule to see when we’re at a venue near you! It would be great to see you there.

Top of the world on tour

Hi

Since our last post we have been travelling the length and breadth of the country. We have had really great feedback from venues and audience alike, (Havant, Darlington, Kendal, Liverpool) along the way we have had illness, tiredness and had to dig the van out of the snow, so all in all an eventful week.

The show has really got into it's stride and the guys are doing a great job, my particular highlight was watching how the audience in Kendal were so comfortable at being involved in the show (one guy mid-show explained in detail how to read closed circuit oxygen apparatus) it was truly a moment of brilliance as it was so unexpected but completely right at the same time. We have managed to get audiences to sing, laugh, and play along with us which is more than we could ask for. Whilst making the show we wanted everyone to feel part of the Everest team and from the reaction we have succeeded which makes us all very happy.

Anyway next week i am sure there will be more adventures a plenty.

Top of the world opens and now on tour

Hi,

Since the last post Top of the world has opened strongly in Bury, we have had some great feedback from the venues and audience alike, getting to this point though has been really hard going. On Monday starting our tech the lighting board (very expensive) decided to die on us which messed our whole day up and we were then playing catch up till our opening night, to put it mildly my nerves were on edge. To add into the mix one of actors in Hoof! rang to say they were ill the night before our show in Keswick. This meant that on the Tuesday i had to drive to Bury to do the get in and then drive up to Keswick to perform in Hoof! and then be in Bury next day without having tech ed or dressed the show a nightmare to say the least!

The tech team and i had plotted the show in advance so on Wednesday it was head's down and get it done. The show opened brilliantly and there was a fantastic buzz in the venue and this is testament to the great the team who were worked there sock's off.

The team left on tour on Friday, and i went to the Everyman to work with the Hoof! team for Friday and Saturday's show so as you can see a busy week all round. Hoof! shows were some of the best we have ever done a real shame it is the last ever in Liverpool but 6 years is a long time and it is time to make something new.

Anyway i am enjoying having some time off (Sunday at least) before back to it, one of the actors will be posting tour updates so stay tuned for weekly updates.

End of week 4 Top of the World

Hi

Since the last post we have a show! (Hurrah) . After a hard week of blocking and re-adjusting scenes it made me realise we have a fine show on our hands and something that has genuinely been a collaborative endeavour. The show open's on Wednesday in Bury and we are very excited to hear what people think. We still have a busy few days to put all the lighting, sound and film into the show, but the team are all in good form and i am confident we will be firing on all cylinders come wednesday evening.

Adrian and I went over to The Met in Bury on Saturday to see 'The conquest of Everest' the film that inspired the show, it was great to see so many people there. I spoke about the show and at the end loads of people stayed to chat and booked tickets to see T.O.T.W which was great.

It has been a busy week but one which end with some sad news, we found out that Alf Gregory one of the Everest Team passed away, our thoughts are with his family and friends. We have decided that this tour will be dedicated to the memory of Alf.

Anyway still lots of work to do this week, but the summit is within sight and then we can celebrate and have a nice drink. Enjoy valentines day.

End of week 3 Top of the World

Hi,

Since the last post the show has moved on massively, we have nearly finished generating all the material which leaves a week and half to rehearse and tech before we open. The team are in good spirits as am i, as we know we have a good show on our hands but still with plenty of work to go.

Particular highlights this week were the use and exploration of what the ladders can do (you would not believed what we have tried) the use of ropes, puppets and my particular favourite elastic. All have made it into the show in one form or another. The production team have been cracking on finishing off music, film, costumes, tents and a whole host of other things.

We received an email from Mary Lowe wife of George Lowe (Everest expedition 1953) saying that she will be coming to see the show and that she has sent it to other surviving members of the Everest team, i was blown away by the news but also very scared as we are staging there
lives.

End of week 2 of rehearsals (top of the world)

Hi,

Wow what a busy week, we have generated loads of material and the show is looking great. We were joined by various members of the production team across the week and there input and feedback has been invaluable. It is hard sometimes to be sure you are on the right path, but i am now sure we are. The work and process is very fluid with everyone inputting ideas, it is so much fun to generate work in this environment and you have to pinch yourself to remind you are getting paid to do this. My highlight of the week was the creation of an avalanche and on Friday the song Top of the world.

Loads of things still to do but we are on track, now have the weekend to reflect, shape ideas and try to shake this cold of which is the only downside to the whole week.

Hi,

End of our first week of rehearsals for top of the world. After a week of playing prior to xmas we get down to the fact that we have to make a show, exciting and terrifying at the same time. As any devisor will tell you are always on the point of, which way do we go? where to explore? what to leave out? a feeling akin i imagine to the how Hilary and tenzing felt, excited but nervous of the unknown. The team are great and we are all feeling are way slowly but surely in to the grove, but the main thing is we are having fun this keeps the room light and creative, whilst at the same time we are focused on asking the bigger questions as mentioned above.

We explore and will continue to do so with this thought at the forefront of our minds the journey starts with the first step, and we are are walking we just have 3 more weeks to go.

So... Spike's first blog. To begin with here's a little background info:

Company History
Established in 1997, Spike Theatre is a touring, theatre company that creates accessible, engaging and visually exciting work. With an emphasis on exploring and developing a bold style of storytelling using physical creativity, it draws upon various disciplines such as, acrobatics, ensemble performance, animation, mime, clown and strong characterisation. Spike produces an original style of ‘Total’ theatre with the performer at the centre of its creative force.

Spike is run by artistic director, Mark Smith and administrator, Adrian Turrell-Watts.

In the creation of Spike’s work the company draw on a growing pool of performers, musicians, acrobats, designers, puppet makers and a host of other creative talent.

Spike has been part of Arts Council England’s portfolio of Regularly Funded Organisations in the North West since 2003.

Top of the World

... is a brand new show devised by the company for touring from February-April this year. It features two performers new to the company - Jamie Wood and Eugene Salleh. They are playing Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay respectively in a re-telling of the story of the first ascent of Everest back in 1953.

The Director (Mark Smith), Stage Manager (Chris Tomlinson) and the cast will be blogging away during the rehearsals and tour so watch this space for insider information about the creation and development of the show.. and if you get along to a performance on the tour we'd love to read your comments here too.

Hoof! & Hoof Jnr!

Our amazing spontaneous theatre show Hoof! is off on it's travels again this spring too.

The show is playing its last ever Liverpool dates at The Everyman Theatre next month (Feb 19th & 20th) so if you're in the area get along to catch the show in its home city while you can!

The Everyman is also playing host to Hoof's baby offspring - Hoof Jnr! - at 2pm on Saturday 20th so bring yourselves and the kids along to help decide the characters and story in this never-to-be-repeated improvised stage show for children aged 5+ and their families.

In addition to our last ever Liverpool dates, the Hoof! teams will be playing their first ever shows in Keswick (Theatre by the Lake - Feb 16th 7:30pm) and Lancaster (April 17th - Hoof! @8pm and Hoof Jnr! @ 2pm).
